    ABSTRACT OF THE WILL OF RICHARD THRALE OF MARSHALLS WICK IN THE PARISH OF SANDRIDGE, COUNTY OF HERTFORD. yeoman.

    I give all my freehold and copyhold messuages, lands etc. except the message called Greenes and such part of the land belonging as were purchased by me of Jonathan Cox and Margaret his wife containing about 40 acres situate in the parish of Sandridge co. Hertford having surrendered such part as is copyhold to the use of my will to my brother John Thrale and my brother-in-law John Andrews on trust for the purposes hereinafter mentioned. That my Trustees out of the rents of the premises hereby devised shall pay the yearly sum of £20 to my eldest son Thomas until age of 21 for his maintenance and education and the several yearly annuities of £10 for the maintenance and education of my daughters Ann, Susan, Ellen and my sons William and Ralph Thrale until their respective portions hereafter given them shall become payable.

    That my said Trustees shall by mortgage of said premises raise and pay to my said three daughters and my said sons William and Ralph the sum of £250 a piece at age of 21 if any die before that time the yearly sum for maintenance shall cease or of the said portion shall happen to be raised the same shall be paid to my heir at Iaw.

    I give my aforesaid messuage called Greenes with appurtenances thereto belonging in the parish of Sandridge and all the lands purchased of Jonathan Cox and Margaret his wife in Sandridge aforesaid and all my Tythes of Inheritance issueing in the parish of St. Michael in said County of Hertfordto my son Richard Thrale his heirs and assigns for ever.

    My freehold Close of land called little Copyhold Field containing 7 acres in the parish of St. Michael aforesaid abutting on the Highway leading from St. Albans towards Luton on the west after decease of Anne my wife the same being settled on her in jointure to my son Richard Thrale his heirs and assigns for ever. I give my leasehold lands tenements etc. that are settled on my said wife in jointure being in the parish of St. Michael after my wife's death to my said son Richard. If my said son Richard die before age of 21 and before he shall be married or if my eldest son Thomas shall die before age of 21 and before he be married so that my said son Richard become my heir at law then in either case I devise the said messuage called Greenes to my son John Thrale his heirs and assigns for ever.

    Then also in either of the said cases I give my said close called Little Copyhold Field (after my wife's death) and after decease of my son Thomas and my said son Richard or either of them son John his heirs and assigns and ineither of the said cases I give all my leasehold lands that are settled on my said wife after my wife's decease and after the decease of my eldest son Thomas and my son Richard or either of them as aforesaid to my son John.

    My Trustees shall have full power to let the same estate during the minority of my son Richard and to receive the rents and profits thereof for my said son Richard's use and benefit, his minority and before marriage or in case my eldest son his death in his minority and before marriage.

    I give my Trustees authority to let the estate and receive the rents intil my son John or such other of my children as shall be entitled thereto shall attain age of 21. Trustees to pay son Richard during minority the yearly sum of £15 for [his] maintenance. In case of his death in his minority and before marriage or in case my eldest son Thomas his death in minority and before marriage then the whole rents and profits shall be put at interest for the benefit of my son John in cases on Thomas die in minority and my son Richard survive him said trustees to pay son Richard £20 per annum in liue of said £15 per annum.

    To my Trustees all my Leasehold lands, Tythes etc. in the parish of St. Michael not settled on my said wife that my said trustees out of the rents pay the yearly sum of £15 to son John for his maintenance until his portion becomes due and to raise by mortgage or sale and pay to said son John £300 at age of 21 if he die before the time limited for the said yearly sum shall be void. Or if my said son Richard die before age of 21 or if son Thomas die before 21 then the said £300 shall not be paid to son John my trustees shall pay one moyety to my son William and the other moyety to my son Ralph at their respective ages of 21. As soon as my trustees shall have paid their charges and the sums of £300 and the yearly sums for maintenance to son John then my trustees shall execute a conveyance of said premises to said son Richard. In case my son Richard shall be living then and in case my eldest son shall not have departed this life in his minority and before marriage. But in case my son Richard shall be dead or in case my said eldest son die in his minority and before marriage so that my son Richard become my heir at law then my trustees after expenses etc of said trustees be paid and the trusts on my leasehold estate be discharged execute conveyance of said premises to my son John.

    I give to my wife all my wearing apparrell and half of my brass, linen and other household stuff and I nominate my wife Guardian of my sons until age of 21 and my daughers until age of 21 or marriage.

    My trustees executors and guardians of my children after the decease or marriage of my wife.

    To my brother John Thrale and brother-in-law John Andrews executors £10 a piece.

    To the poor of Sandridge £5.

    The overplus of my personal estate towards the payment of charges etc. of my said trustees.

    Memorandum: To my three daughters Ann, Susan and Ellen Thrale and my two sons William and Ralph Thrale £50 a piece over and above the £250 a piece already given them. 9th June, 1711.

    Robert Jenkyn of Harpenden co. Hertford gent. maketh oath that the 9 June 1711 he drew up the above said Codicil to be added to the will of above named Richard Thrale But lying then sick in his Bed and being lifted up whereby to execute the same he departed this life within a little time. 11th October 1711.
