    John is recorded as voting for Paggen Hal in the parliamentary election. Voting rights came with being a "40-shilling Freeholder" i.e. he owned freehold property worth at least 40 shillings a year in rent or income.

    ABSTRACT OF THE WILL OF JOHN THRATE OF HAMMONDS END IN THE PARISH OF SAUNDRIDGE CO. HERTFORD. yeoman.

    DATED 8th June 1754. - PROVED 3rd Feb. 1755. (Archd. St. Albans Reg• 1743-1771 fo. 261)


    All my messuages, cottages lands etc whatsoever as well Freehold as Copyhold in the parish Saundridge I give to my second son John Thrale and his heirs and assigns on condition that my said son shall pay to my eldest son Thomas Thrale £250 within three years after my decease if my son Thomas be then living.

    I will that the rents of my said estate in Saundridge until my said son John attain the age of 21 shall be applied for the paying the charges and expenses of the Fine to the Lord of the Manor and other charges relating to the admission of my son John. The remainder of the rents until my said son John attain age of 21 shall be applied towards the maintenance ete of my children as shall by Anna my Wife in her discretion be thought most useful. If my said son John die before age of 21 without (lawful issue) then the said messages lands etc to my third son William Thrale his heirs and assigns for ever (subject as herein beforementioned) and in such case I will the Rents of my said estate until my son William attain the age of 21 shall be applied as follows for the maintenance of my children as my wife in her discretion be thought most needful.

    If both my sons John and William die before age of 21 without lawful issue then I give the said message to the use of such of my daughters as shall be living and their heirs and assigns (subject as aforesaid) All in pursuance of the Power to me given by Certain Indentures bearing date 8th April 1741 between the said John Thrale the testator and Anna my wife of the one part and Thomas May of Redbourne in the County of Hertford, tanner of the other part.

    I give all my message or tenement and Farm called Shepherds in Botely in the parish of Chesham co. Bucks. and all fields closes etc. and all that Close of land adjoining containing nine acres and all other my freehold lands etc in the parish of Chesham after the decease of said Anna my wife who has an Estate in the same limited unto her by the before mentioned Indenture for the term of her life unto the use of my third son William Thrale his heirs and assigns for ever. Subject to payment of £60 a piece unto my four daughters, namely Abigail wife of John Grindon, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah Thrale within 6 months after the death of Anna my wife. That in case my said son William die before age of 21 without lawful issue then I give the same hereditments in Chesham after the decease of Anna my wife unto my second son John Thrale his heirs and assigns chargeable as aforesaid also with the payment of the further sum of £100 a piece (to her four daughters). If the said Abigail Grindon depart this life before the said sums of £100 a piece £60 shall become payable then I give the said sums to the children of the said Abigail Grindon as shall be living when the said Legacies become due.

    If both my sons John and William die before ages of 21 without lawful issue then I give the said hereditaments in Cheshan after the decease of my wife to such of my daughters as shall be living their heirs and assigns equally.

    To my three daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah Thrale £250 each at age of 21 or marriage. The interest of the said legacies to be applied for their maintenance. If any die to the said Legacy to be divided amongst all my children (except my son Thomas).

    To my said son John Smith1 his executors etc my leasehold messuage and Blacksmiths shop at Coleman Green in the parish of Saundridge now or late in the occupation of John Roberts.

    To my daughter Anna now the wife of Robert Wells £20.

    To Anna my wife the Bed, Bedding goods furniture belonging to the best chamber and parlour in my Dwelling House also 6 pairs of sheets, Dozen good napkins six pewter Dishes and a dozen pewter plates, one brass kettle, and Pottage Pot one sauce pan, and two skillets.

    The rest of my household goods, stock, money etc to my son John Thrale.

    Anna my wife guardian of my children during their minority.

    Executrix Wife Anna, and son John. executor.

    Witnesses. John Smith, of Beech Hide, Ralph Thrale of Nomans Land. John Runnington.

    on the 3rd day was proved the Will of John Thrale late of the parish of Saundridge decd. by Anna Thrale executrix power being reserved for the Executor when he shall require same.
